Recent changes in New Zealand now allow appropriately trained General Practitioners to assess, diagnose and initiate medication for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in adults. These changes are intended to improve access to care for people who may benefit from assessment and treatment.

While GPs are now permitted to provide this service, ADHD assessment and treatment initiation is not considered part of core general practice. It requires additional training, extended consultation time and specific clinical processes.

At present, our practice does not offer adult ADHD assessment or treatment initiation services.

If you have concerns that you may have ADHD, we encourage you to book an appointment with your GP to discuss your symptoms. Your doctor can provide guidance and, where appropriate, refer you to a private specialist service for assessment.

Currently, there are no publicly funded adult ADHD assessment services available in New Zealand.
