Updates to Prescribing and Controlled Medicines

Updates to Prescribing and Controlled Medicines

At Ranolf Medical Centre, safe and effective prescribing is a key part of providing high quality care. As national regulations and best practice guidance evolve, we regularly review our policies to ensure they reflect current standards and support patient safety.

Recent changes to prescribing rules mean some patients may now be eligible for longer prescription durations, while others will continue to require regular reviews. Decisions about repeat prescriptions are always made on an individual basis by your GP, taking into account your health needs, stability, and the type of medication prescribed. You can read the Repeat Prescriptions Policy here.

We have also updated our Controlled Drug Policy to reflect legal requirements around medicines that carry higher risks, such as strong pain relief, sedatives, and some ADHD medications. These medicines require closer monitoring, regular review, and clear prescribing plans to ensure they are used safely and appropriately. You can read the Controlled Drug Policy here.

We encourage patients and whānau to read these policies to better understand how prescriptions are managed and what to expect when requesting repeats.

If you have questions or would like to discuss your medications, please speak with your usual GP or contact the us for support.
